ESCAPE! In most cases an escaped bird won't be found. The first
thing to do is get out there and search immediately. You may be able to
retrieve your bird if he hasn't gotten too far away. Many parrots who
have had their wings clipped for years will not be confident flying.
Therefore, your bird could be sitting right above you in a big tree,
wishing you would come get them, but too terrified to fly down to you.
If this is the case, enlist the help of neighbors. You want someone the
bird knows to remain under the tree talking to it, trying to keep it
calm so it doesn't fly any farther away. You then want to find a ladder
tall enough to reach your pet. You may have to go door to door
explaining the situation. If you have a regular handyman, he may have a
very tall ladder that you could borrow. The person who goes up to the
bird should be someone he knows. A stranger may frighten him and cause
him to fly to another tree. If your bird is nowhere in sight the most
important thing is to get signs up. A tame parrot will often go to a
human, any human, when it gets hungry enough. You want to canvas the
neighborhood to make sure everyone and anyone knows this bird is yours
should it show up on their back porch.

Cockatiel Pet |

A Cockatiel
Pet:
A cockatiel will be a nice companion and
addition to your family if you get one that was hand fed
as a baby, or a hand tamed one. What a cockatiel lacks
in size, it makes up for in personality. A cockatiel,
being a small parrot is intelligent.
Cockatiels are very social flocking birds and they can't
thrive without
socialization, never put a cockatiel in a seldom used back room, alone. It
will think it has been abandoned, and will be under
stress. As long as it's cage is where it can see you or
family members when someone is home, it will be pretty
content and feel it's with it's 'flock family'. If
your cockatiel keeps calling for you, it wants to know
if you are home and o.k. Just answer it back!
Things to Consider Before Purchasing: Cockatiels live up to 20 years,
so the purchasing of a cockatiel will be a decision you'll likely live with for
a long time. A badly behaved cockatiel is something you and your
family want to avoid. To check the temperament of the cockatiel
before your buy it, put your finger or hand out near the bird. If it climbs onto
your finger/hand it was likely hand trained. Cockatiels love human contact and
once they have become accustomed to it, they crave a scratch on the head, a pet
or a ride on their human's shoulder. If the cockatiel refuses to get on your
finger or tries to bite, you'd rather move on to another breeder or pet shop.
Only purchase a hand tame cockatiel with good temperament.
Neat-niks,
anyone with ALLERGIES need not apply...Cockatiels, (like
Cockatoos and African Gray parrots) are notorious DUST
producers, the dust comes from natural feather powder.
Spray misting frequently or baths do help a lot.
YOUR COCKATIEL'S DIET:
Find out what your new bird was fed from the
breeder/seller, for the best beginning. What does
your bird need? We now know that seed is not the
only food needed by pet birds, and in fact, birds on
a seed only diet, are very unhealthy. Cockatiels
love bird seed. Seeds are like junk food to birds
and they will eat them exclusively if given the
chance. Seeds are high in fats and do not contain
all of the nutrients required to keep your bird
healthy. Only 30 -40% of a bird's diet
should be seed. Of the other 60-70%, dark leafy
green vegetables, are the most
important. This is where he obtains vital minerals
and vitamins plus calcium.
Pet cockatiels can learn to accept most veggies,
whole grain bread, pasta, boiled eggs, rinsed soaked
seeds. Cockatiels have to recognize pellets or any
new food as food to eat it, so if you want to
convert to pelleted bird diet (Kaytee Exact,
Roudybush, etc.) Please, READ the conversion methods
on the package! You may have to start the conversion
over with another brand. For a cockatiel to learn to
eat pellets, it will take a few months. Don't give
additional vitamins, or a cuttlebone if you feed
pellet food. You can give dark green
vegetables such as broccoli and kale for calcium.
Even
though they don't recognize something new as
food....pet cockatiels notice what YOU eat and
will want to taste it, but don't let them eat
from your mouth. Hookbills (parrots) do not
need grit to digest their feed. It is
recommended that you don't give cockatiels grit.
An exception is oyster shell, my understanding
is that oyster shell can be digested and
absorbed.
[LEARN the safe and toxic plants before your
bird has access to any].
CAGE
& IT'S LOCATION:
20"x 20" x 18 H" is the minimum size, with a
large platform door, 3/4 inch bar spacing. There
should be bars running horizontally for the
cockatiel to climb up with. Round, tower cages
are great-looking but not good cockatiel cages.
It is important the cockatiel can open it's
wings without hitting something or the sides of
the cage. Don't cramp it by loading up the
inside of the cage then with too many toys.
Cockatiels are powerful flyers and frequently
need to exercise their 14+ inch wing span by hanging
onto a perch and beating their wings. Cockatiels
love coming out to a playpen on the top of the
cage.
Perches of different sizes are very important
for the bottoms of your bird's feet, don't let
them get pressure sores, (a difficult condition
to heal in my experience). I love the natural
manzanita branch perches. Scrape dirty perches
clean. (Damp perches aren't good). Wash the
removable wire cage bottoms weekly. You can use
diluted bleach or apple cider vinegar or white
vinegar when you wash your birdcage.
Cage LOCATION has to be in a draft free area,
not near registers, fans or air conditioning, or
direct hot sun light.
The kitchen is a hazardous room because of
cooking steam, also overheated Teflon is a bird
killer. Cockatiels
are very susceptible to strong smells such as
insecticides, smoke and air fresheners. Their
respiratory system is so efficient some of these
can kill a cockatiel.
Don't buy gravel coated perch covers or the mite
protector to hang in cage. WATER containers are
the most common place for bacterial buildup and
should be washed daily. Water bottles are not an
excuse to let the water go unchanged daily. My
cockatiels take a drink when I give them cold
fresh water. They like it better too! When
offered the choice, birds always prefer cool
bath water over warm.
Change the cage bottom paper daily. Mold spores
from uneaten food and dried poops getting
airborne cause respiratory disease infections
and other possible disease spread in the bird's
air space. (The reason that quarantine has to be
in a different room.)
DAYLIGHT & DARKNESS [from
Lafeber]
Nature constructed birds live within
a balance of day and night, in fact, the
influence of daylight and darkness has been so
great that it has been said that birds are a
"slave to light". Many effects can be had by
shortening and lengthening the amount that the
bird receives in 24 hours. Poultry
raisers for years have stimulated increased egg
production by having the lights in their poultry
houses remain on extra hours after sunset.
Bird's migration is partly based on days
becoming longer in the spring and shorter in the
fall. Pet birds probably require the same amount
of light and dark that are occurring in a
natural day. In the summer the birds would
have eight hours of darkness daily and in winter
they would have about 12 hours of darkness
daily. Birds in the family recreation room
that are kept up until midnight every night
because of the television programs and who then
have their sleep cut short in the morning
because the sun rises early or light is turned
on may be receiving only five to six hours of
sleep every day. Inadequate amounts of rest for
birds will cause constant stress and eventually
will show the result of this in a breakdown of
their health. The periods of light and dark can
be controlled in pet birds with a heavy cage
cover.
GROOMING:
WING TRIMS Reasons for trimming wings are #1 It
won't escape from an open door. #2 It helps in
taming and training, by keeping it subordinate.
Reason not to trim wings: Flighted birds are
trim and toned if they have room to actually
fly.
Have an experienced cockatiel breeder
(preferably), or an avian vet show you how to trim the
cockatiels wings and toenails. It doesn't hurt
when you trim feathers or nails. If you
accidentally cut a blood-feather (a new feather
encased in a keratin sheath with a blood source
at it's base), it will bleed and you just have
to pull the feather (straight) out to stop the
bleeding.
Make sure to look at the UNDERSIDE of the wing
before making a cut! You will know a
blood-feather.

The nails have a blood vein in them, if you cut
too much of the nail tip have on hand cornstarch
or 'kwick stop' to apply to a bleeding nail.
With a little practice, you can groom wings and
nails yourself.

You can
take an emery board and file the tips of the
nails, (very safe and effective for pet birds
when their nails feel like little needles to
your skin). Observe your bird's nails as the
bird ages, you may see that it's nails curve
making climbing in the cage difficult. Look at
the bottoms of the bird's feet occasionally to
see that they are in good condition.
BEAK TRIMS it is
unlikely that your cockatiel will need its beak
trimmed at all, if you
provide a cuttle-bone for it to chew on, but if
you think your bird's beak is overgrown... I
strongly advise you to seek an avian
veterinarian to find out why. It may be a
disease or fatty liver (diet) related.
A bird's beak has sensory capabilities and
contains a blood supply. This tells the bird
what he has in his beak and basically whether it
is food or not. To damage or crack the beak so
it will not re-grow normally would pose a threat
to the bird's ability to eat. Little wonder that
it is traumatic for a bird to get a beak trim.
Please do not ever try trimming your bird's beak
yourself. Take it to your trusted avian vet
first for an evaluation.
Mist your cockatiel with water once or twice
a week (early in the day) using a small
spray mister found in a store's hair care
section. It should be a pretty fine mist.
Some spray bottles make a noise they don't
like. Once they are getting use to it, it
helps keep their feathers in shiny "show
condition"! It also helps keep the feather
dust under control.
CHARACTERISTICS:
Cockatiels like to walk on the
floor, many have been accidentally
stepped on. When your cockatiel
comes out of it's cage to play and
exercise, think like you would if
you had a toddler in the house
and...try to think ahead of the
potential dangers!
Most
cockatiels have "night
frights". Many times they
won't stop flapping their
wings and flying around in
the cage until a light is
turned on. They may break a
blood feather, bleeding
profusely until you pull out
the blood-feather.
Male cockatiels are
likely to learn to
whistle tunes very well,
"Old McDonald"; "Andy
Griffith theme"; and
learn to mimic language
phrases that is
understandable.. in a
unique bird-y voice.
Also males always have
an impressive wolf
whistle!
Females are usually
pretty quiet, and very
affectionate.
MATURITY:
It is characteristic for
cockatiels to be willing
to raise a family. A
compatible, bonded pair
work together raising
their young. Although
they may breed at 9
months, they need more
time to mature
physically and mentally,
like us. Hens need to be
18 months old to be
considered to be mature.
The cock birds should be
1 year old. Their
courting, nesting and
parenting skills
improves with practice.
It's more noticeable if
they were not
parent-raised. There are
some that should not be
bred because.. they are
full brother & sister,
they need a 6 month
"rest" after feeding 2
average clutches of
chicks, because they
really lose weight
keeping chicks fed.
SEXING:
Unless sexed by
the breeder that
knows his/her
genetics, keeps
pedigree records
(and separates
his pairs),
surgical or DNA
sexing,
AVIAN
BIOTECH.COM
it is near
impossible to
sex cockatiels
accurately
except by
behavior after
around 4 1/2
months old & up;
when males start
vocalizing what
later will be a
courting song.
They begin to
practice
cockbird macho
actions that
later will
impress a
female... they
bow, bob their
head and drum on
the perch, hold
their wings
slightly open,
and hop.
Eventually comes
that 'wolf
WHISTLE' a male
tiel does so
well!
There are those
that claim to
have a method
earlier i.e. by
spots under
wings, pelvic
bone space but
50% of the time
they are right,
because of luck!

Parrots tend to eat twice daily -- at
sunrise and before sunset (with a bit of grazing here and there during the day). They are also social
flock eaters, and are happiest when their "flock" (that's you and the members of
your household -- human and avian) eats together. Use these two facts to your
advantage when trying to get the bird |
